ReLEx Smile Surgical Procedure
ReLEx SMILE stands for Refractive Lenticule Extraction Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. In the ReLEx SMILE technique, two incisions are created with a femtosecond laser at a depth of 110 to 130 microns of the cornea. These two incisions form a small, lens-shaped tissue (lenticule) within the cornea. By removing the lenticule through a 2-4 mm incision, the cornea is reshaped and the refractive error is corrected. ReLEx SMILE is a flapless procedure that means the least removal of the corneal tissue.

ReLEx SMILE or Femto Lasik Eye Surgery?
Both procedures are refractive eye surgeries performed with a femtosecond laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision problems. However, ReLEx SMILE is a newer and less invasive method without making a flap in the cornea. The incision in the ReLEx SMILE is smaller leading to a shorter recovery time and fewer post-op complications, such as dry eyes. It could also be a better option for people with thin corneas. On the other hand, Femto Lasik Eye Surgery could be a better option for people with corneal irregularities or certain types of vision problems. You should consult your eye surgeon to determine which procedure is best for you regarding your specific needs.
ReLEx SMILE or PRK?
While both methods are effective ways for vision correction to become less dependent on glasses and contact lenses, there are differences between them that make one of the procedures a better option for you. While PRK can treat all refractive errors, ReLEx SMILE is used for nearsightedness and astigmatism. PRK (or photorefractive keratomileusis) is the most invasive procedure, while ReLEx SMILE is the least invasive laser eye surgery. In PRK, unlike ReLEx SMILE, the epithelium is removed and the recovery time is longer. PRK can be beneficial for those with thin cornea or those who participate in contact sports.
