Infertility Treatment in Iran
Why Infertility Treatment in Iran?
Iran has had a dramatic advancement in infertility treatments in recent decades. Today, with more than 80 infertility clinics in Iran, some of the best in Tehran (though the oldest IVF clinic opened in Yazd over three decades ago), Iran is the top destination in the Middle East for fertility treatments. Each year, numerous foreign couples travel to the country for infertility treatment in Iran.
Modern clinics with proficient infertility specialists, the latest technologies and scientific findings in infertility treatment, and well-equipped research centers offer high success rates of various infertility treatment services, and Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART), including diagnostic and operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, cystoscopy, IUI, ovulation induction (OI), IVF, ICSI, PGT (Preimplantation Genetic Testing), PESA/TESE, microscopic TESA, IVM, PGD, PGS, vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, TURD, gamete and embryo cryopreservation, assisted hatching, karyotyping, molecular genetic tests such as Factor V Leiden, Factor II, and MTHFR gene, fetal sex determination or gender selection, as well as others routinely offered to patients.
Among different treatments, the success rate for IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is about 16%, for ICSI 40-45%, and for embryo cryopreservation about 50% and more, while the newest method is IVF.
Some fertility treatment clinics in Iran also offer cell therapy. Stem cell therapy in Iran is a modern approach to treating most diseases using stem cells taken from mesenchymal stem cells including the umbilical cord tissue, bone marrow or fat, and pulp tissue from primary teeth, as well as hematopoietic stem cells including peripheral blood, umbilical cord blood, and bone marrow.
Iran is also a pioneer in the Middle East in producing and offering other fertility services and medical products, such as biological dressing from amniotic membranes, umbilical cord serum (UCS), platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and gamete bank.
The cost of infertility treatment in Iran is the most competitive; it is about one-third of the cost in the USA and the UK and half of the price in Turkey. However, its success is competitive with the best international centers in the field. That is why every year, many foreign people travel to the country to receive infertility treatment in Iran.

Infertility
Infertility is a medical specialty that focuses on the treatment of fertility issues in couples who aren’t able to conceive a child even after a year of unprotected sexual intercourse. There is no direct cause of infertility in men and women. Still, it can be attributed to certain issues such as hormonal imbalance, low sperm count and motility, and problems with ovulation. The rate of infertility among Iranian couples is estimated to be 20-25%, while the global rate is estimated to be 10-15%. In 2023, it was estimated one couple out of 6 couples suffered from infertility issues. The success rate of infertility treatments depends on various factors, such as age and couples’ condition, but it is normally about 45% that could be increased in younger couples.
What Causes Infertility in Men & Women
Different reasons cause infertility in men and women. It could be congenital or happen later in life due to an illness or injury. In men, infertility is usually relevant to the inability to sperm production, too little sperm production, or problems with sperm mobility to reach an egg. For women, infertility is normally related to the ovulation disorders. Other reasons could be uterus or cervix problems and uterine fibroid. Blocked fallopian tubes could be another reason for infertility in women and it can be caused by endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, or surgery for ectopic pregnancy.
