Eye Color Change (Artificial Iris Implant) Surgery Package

The color of the iris varies widely from person to person in different parts of the world, and in some people, it can be even composed of two or more different pigments. Black, light, and dark brown are the most common eye colors, which are found in about three-quarters of the world’s population. Iris also plays an important role in controlling the amount of light entering the eye and protecting the eye from the harmful rays of the sun. Most candidates for iris implant surgery are people who suffer from aniridia (congenital absence of the iris) or iris abnormalities caused by eye diseases or injuries.

Surgical Procedure

Who Are Good Candidates for Eye Color Change Surgery

1. Patients with albinism

2. Patients with aniridia (congenital absence of the iris)

3. People with iris abnormalities caused by eye injuries

4. Patients with total or sub‐total iris loss

5. People with iris coloboma (a congenital hole in the iris)

6. Patients with cystic or multilayered iris

 

Who Are NOT Good Candidates for Eye Color Change Surgery

• Patients who had a history of eye surgery

• Patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes, Behçet’s disease, and any collagen-related diseases

• Patients with HIV

• Patients with Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV)

 

Pre-Operative Necessary Tests and Examinations

1. Visual acuity test to determine your central vision and the refractive state of both eyes.

2. Intraocular pressure test

3. Anterior chamber depth measurement

4. Central corneal thickness measurement

5. Anterior chamber angle assessment

6. Retinal examination

7. Determining the axial length of the eye

8. Corneal endothelial cell count in patients over 40 years

 

Post-Operative Care

• Postoperative itching and sometimes mild discomfort are normal.

• You may experience postoperative tearing and sensitivity to sunlight which will disappear after a few days.

• Within a week of surgery, blurred vision may be experienced but it will gradually resolve after about 2 weeks.

• The recovery time varies from person to person, but a complete recovery can take about 1 month.

• Timely use of antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops prescribed by your ophthalmologist is essential.

• Avoid driving, doing any stretching and strenuous exercises, bending, lifting, and pressing or rubbing your eyes after surgery.

• You can do your daily activities and stair-climbing.
