The main purpose of this cosmetic or therapeutic eyelid surgery is to rejuvenate and repair the area surrounding the eyes so that the appearance of the eyelids improves and the eyes look more beautiful and younger.

Eyelid Surgical Procedure

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. The Upper Blepharoplasty is performed to fix drooping upper eyelids and the Lower Blepharoplasty, sometimes called Eye Bag Removal, is done to remove the eye bags and fat under and beneath the eye. The two procedures can be carried out either separately or combined.

In Upper Blepharoplasty, the surgeon usually hides the suture between the natural folds of the eyelid in the crease of the upper lid, and in Lower Blepharoplasty, the suture is concealed under the lower eyelashes so that it will not be visible.

The surgery is usually done on an outpatient basis, under local anesthesia, and there is no need for hospitalization. In very exceptional cases, the surgery may be performed under general anesthesia, depending on the patient’s health condition and the surgeon’s diagnosis.

Pre-Operative Preparation

• A thorough eye examination should be done before surgery, including tear film assessment, visual acuity test, assessment of the extraocular movement, motor and sensory testing of the facial and ocular nerves, and examination of the condition of the eyebrows and their symmetry.

•  Avoid taking blood thinners such as aspirin and the like, according to your ophthalmologist’s direction, from 10 days to 2 weeks before surgery.

• Avoid smoking at least 6 weeks before the operation for better healing.

• Be sure to inform your ophthalmologist about your medical history including previous surgeries, routine medications (including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, or any herbal supplements) you are taking, or your medical conditions such as drug allergies. Tell the doctor if you have circulatory problems, diabetes, thyroid problems, eye problems, or other serious medical conditions.

 

Eyelid Surgery Aftercare

• Your eyelids may feel tight, sore, or painful as the numbing medicine (anesthesia) wears off. You may experience pain and discomfort for a few days after the surgery. Redness and dry eyes are also normal. Surgeons might prescribe eye drops to help. The discomfort is usually mild and easily controlled with pain medicine.

• If you have any severe pain or reduced vision, be sure to call your ophthalmologist.

• It is generally recommended to use a cold compress for 24 to 48 hours and keep your head raised higher than your chest (use several pillows during sleeping). After 48 hours, if you have bruises, use a warm compress. These measures help to control swelling and bruising of the surgical site.

• The rate of bruising and swelling of the surgical incision site varies among individuals. You shall expect to see swelling and bruising after a few days. They will usually resolve between 2 to 4 weeks. But if they persist for a long time, you should see your doctor to have your condition checked.

• The eyelids have mild secretion or adhesion 1 to 2 weeks after surgery. The use of appropriate eye drops helps to eliminate these discomforts.

• In the first days after surgery, some complications such as excessive tearing, light sensitivity, and temporary vision problems (such as mild blurred or double vision) may occur which are gradually resolved.

• The stitches are usually removed 6 to 8 days after surgery. In some cases, the specialist may apply self-absorbing stitches that do not require removal.

• Avoid heavy lifting, strenuous activities, bending over, and swimming for 10 to 14 days. Specifically, avoid activities that make you move your head abruptly or that increase the blood pressure in your head.

• Avoid activities that may make the eyes dry, such as watching TV, reading, and using a computer for the first several weeks. Take frequent naps.

• Avoid wearing makeup or contact lenses for at least one week after the surgery. It will reduce the risk of infection and also helps reduce swelling. Incisions will also be healed within 2 weeks.
